Dog Obedience Training

Many people spend excessive amounts of money every year on dog obedience training. They do so in the hopes that their dog will not only listen to their voice, they will become a better pet and easier to live with. The fact of the matter is, dog obedience training doesn't really have much to do with actually teaching your dog basic commands. Although it is great to be able to tell your dog to sit or to lay down and have them listen, the obedience really comes in your establishing your dominance over the dog and having them listen to everything that you say.

There are several different types of dog obedience training. Some of the more popular types are simple obedience, in which you teach or do how to sit and lay down and advanced training that can be of use if your dog is purebred and will be taken to shows. Even among the most basic types of dog obedience training there are also several ways in which it can be done. Many people find that rewarding their dogs for good behavior or listening to their commands works best while others choose to use a clicker in order to condition their dog to listen to commands.

You also need to decide if you are going to be doing your dog obedience training at home or in the presence of a qualified trainer. I personally feel that you can not beat the group atmosphere that is felt whenever you take your dog to dog obedience training classes. Not only will the trainer be able to give you a personalized instruction, your dog will be exposed to other dogs as a social training. This can benefit your dog in many different ways.

Although it may take some time and persistence, dog obedience training is a great way to get to know your dog personally and have them be more comfortable with you. It helps to establish you as the alpha dog and you will not only gain your pets respect, you will learn how to respect your pet.
